Surfing for your mental health? Surf therapy has become increasingly popular for mental health intervention. 


It is known that sports and exercise have long-term benefits on our physical and mental health. When performed in a natural environment, physical activity can bring even greater benefits such as reducing anger, depression and stress. 

The sensorial stimulation provided by the outdoors, stimulates the whole body. According to research, spending time in nature, especially by the water, reduces the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine. 

The negative ions with which the ocean water is filled also provide a calming effect. 


Surf therapy involves the use of surfing, the therapeutic elements of the ocean, and structured water activities tailored to each individual’s needs. A surf instructor will adapt the surfing session to the individual’s or group’s needs. 


Participants living with PTSD and major depression appeared to benefit the most from surf therapy in a research from 2020. Not only did surf therapy reduce their depression and anxiety, but it also helped improve their overall mood.
